TravelSupermarket used Google’s Keyword Planner to find the average number of searches each month in each country, looking specifically for the term “holidays in X” for over 870 destinations. The study shows Italy as the clear winner in search for people in countries including the U.S., Canada, Russia, Brazil, China, Mexico, and India.

For people in the U.K., Iceland, Norway, and Algeria, however, Spain topped the search list. Italians themselves also opted for Spain as their chosen getaway. Australians apparently craved a vacation in the Maldives, according to the survey. The top destinations following Italy included Spain, Australia, Greece, and France, respectively.

“Interestingly, European countries dominate the most Googled holiday destinations globally with four out of the top five being located on the continent,” Joey Tyson, travel editor at TravelSupermarket, told The Local. He added that Italy, in particular, gets 226,860 monthly hits according to their research.

If you are one of the thousands of people planning a trip to Italy this year, there are some choice places you don’t want to miss, including taking a gondola ride in Venice, shopping in Milan, or strolling through the Boboli Gardens.
