People Are Putting Their Christmas Lights Back Up to Spread Cheer During Coronavirus

#LightsForLife is the inspiration we need to get those Christmas lights twinkling again.

A little Christmas cheer is a good way to keep your spirits up, even if it’s March.

According to People, lots of people are opting to put their Christmas lights back up in the last few days in an effort to help boost community morale in the wake of COVID-19 (coronavirus).

Social media users have been using the hashtags #LightsForLife and #CoronaKindess and posting photos of their festive lights. It’s unclear who actually started this trend, according to People.

“Today a few of my neighbours decided we needed a bit more light in this dark time and decided to turn their Christmas lights back on,” one Twitter user wrote. “I hope it brings a smile to your face like it did mine.”

Social distancing and quarantine can be hard to bear physically and mentally. Even though staying at home and avoiding people may help slow the spread of the virus, it can also lead to loneliness, stress, anxiety, depression, and other mood changes, according to the American Psychological Association.

Sounds like the perfect time to get back into the holiday spirit.

Some people are putting up simple lighting just as a bright and cheery addition to their home in such uncertain times, while others are going all-out with multi-colored, elaborate light displays. Some have even put up their trees.

Other users have even remarked on the fact that they have been a bit late to take down their holiday decorations, so they decided to just leave them up. “But I just took down my entire display 2 weeks ago, LOL! Guess I'll put them all up now,” said one Twitter user.

Not only are the lights a good way to cheer up the neighborhood, but they also make for a good, safe activity for the family while we’re all socially distancing.

“What if we all put our Christmas lights back up? Then we could get in the car and drive around and look at them. That seems like a fair social distancing activity,” one Twitter user pointed out.

For a boost of cheer, anyone can search for the hashtags #LightsForLife and #CoronaKindess on Twitter and Instagram.

And if you need some more entertainment, you can always visit a virtual museum, watch an online opera or broadway show, and even livestream elderly dogs in Tennessee.
