Man Mysteriously Drowns During Underwater Proposal While on Vacation With Girlfriend (Video)
Steven Weber from Louisiana reportedly drowned while proposing to his girlfriend underwater at a resort in Tanzania last week. Now, his sister says they are no closer to an answer as to what happened.
According to Weber’s longtime girlfriend Kenesha Antoine, the pair were vacationing at the Manta Resort on Pemba Island in Tanzania. It was there that Weber decided to propose to his girlfriend by swimming up to an underwater window with the ring in his hand.
Antoine took a video of the proposal, which she also shared on Facebook. In the video, Weber can be seen comfortably swimming below the surface and placing a note against the window, which read: "I can't hold my breath long enough to tell you everything I love about you. BUT...Everything I love about you I love more EVERY DAY! Will you please be my WIFE? Marry me???"
Antoine ecstatically said yes. She ran to the surface upstairs, however, Weber never resurfaced.
"You never emerged from those depths, so you never got to hear my answer, 'Yes! Yes! A million times, yes, I will marry you!!' " she wrote in the post. "We never got to embrace and celebrate the beginning of the rest of our lives together, as the best day of our lives turned into the worst, in the cruelest twist of fate imaginable.” She added, "I will try to take solace in the fact that we enjoyed the most amazing bucket list experiences these past few days, and that we both were so happy and absolutely giddy with excitement in our final moments together."
Now, Weber’s sister, Mandy Hoffman, has released her own statement expressing her grief. Of her brother, she wrote: “Steven has had a very interesting life and a lot of ups and downs but he always and will always hold such a special place in the heart of so many people. He just had this infectious smile and he really played a significant role in helping people through the recovery process. His loss and his passing is going to create a void in our lives that we will ever be able to fill.”
According to Hoffman, the family still does not have full answers as to what happened to Weber.
Of the drowning, the resort offered ABC a short statement reading, "Our sincerest condolences, thoughts, and prayers are with his girlfriend, families and friends impacted by this tragic accident.”
The U.S. State Department also confirmed Weber’s death to ABC. It too shared a statement reading, "We offer our sincerest condolences to the family on their loss. We stand ready to provide all appropriate consular assistance. Out of respect to the family during this difficult time, we have no further comment."
