When Fiona Frie moved to the United States from Scotland, she didn’t anticipate a problem finding sweets—at least to her taste. Leaving behind the medical profession, she opened an old timey sweet “shoppe” in Union Square. The 200 jars behind the counters are filled with candy, including both hard and soft varieties, as well as toffee and chocolate. There is even a selection of candy with names like old fashioned humbugs, gobstopping gingers, and liquorice broomsticks. Fiona’s also has American candy-of-yore like the nut goodie—a milk chocolate bar with a creamy maple center from Minnesota that dates to 1921.
