The half-hour Manly Ferry ride from Circular Quay to the North Shore beach 'burb of Manly boasts stellar views of the Harbour Bridge, Opera House, and city skyline as well as the harbor's North and South Heads. Manly offers easy harborside swimming by the ferry wharf (home to Hugo's Manly for delicious pizza), or walk across to pine-lined, oceanside Manly Beach for proper waves. Manly Surf School can teach you to ride them. You'll find surf shops, bars, cafés, and waterfront restaurants aplenty, dishing up fish and chips and microbrewed local beer. The Boathouse Shelly Beach is a stylish spot by snorkel-friendly Shelly Beach. Get water-sporty, hire a bike, or stretch your legs on the coastal Manly to Spit Bridge Walk (three to four hours), which takes in tranquil bush and Aboriginal rock carvings. From Spit Bridge, bus back to the city (alternatively, pick up a bus from Wynyard to Spit Bridge and stroll towards Manly). For a shorter walk, ramble in the Manly North Head Sanctuary, where historic military relics and sea-view lookouts rub shoulders amid pristine shrub land.
