Set in a heritage-listed 19th-century building that once served as the bustling Eveleigh Rail Yards, Carriageworks opened in 2007 as an exciting arts hub. Located in the creative inner-west, between Redfern and Newtown, it's now home to cutting-edge theater, dance, film, and music companies (some with a strong Aboriginal focus), with regular performances as well as visiting acts. Swing by for coffee, brunch, or a craft beer at plant-hung Cornerstone Bar & Food, or catch modern art shows at Anna Schwartz Gallery. The cavernous atrium and industrial-chic offshoots frequently host free art events and festival installations, as well as invite-only fashion shows and ticketed fairs such as art-fest Sydney Contemporary. Carriageworks Farmers Market (formerly Eveleigh Farmers Market) pops up opposite in a vast, semi-alfresco covered warehouse every Saturday (8 a.m. - 1p.m.) tempting foodies with fresh, seasonal produce and tasty snacks.
