Art Gallery of New South Wales
Culture vultures should make a beeline for Sydney's major art institution, the Art Gallery of New South Wales. Established in 1871, it's an imposing classical building opposite the Royal Botanic Garden. Australian, Aboriginal, Asian, and European art stars, with a free permanent collection and changing exhibitions (entry fees may apply). Lunch at Matt Moran's chic restaurant Chiswick at the Gallery or the informal café, then hit up the shop for art and design finds. Enjoy art after hours on Wednesday nights, and regular tours. The annual Archibald Prize for Australian portraits is a must-see. Japanese architects SANAA, behind New York's New Museum, will be adding glassy modern extensions by 2021.
