Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art
Located just off Scottsdale's Civic Center plaza, the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art is surrounded by a gorgeous city park with fountains and public sculptures. Phoenix modernist architect Will Bruder, a disciple of architect Piero Soleri, designed the space, and the minimalist building includes the rare Knight Rise Skyspace by famed light artist James Turrell, where visitors can watch the changing lights of the desert horizon. As Arizona's only museum dedicated solely to modern works of art, design, and architecture, the permanent collection of more than 2,000 pieces includes work by Yves Klein, Russel Wright, and Josef Albers. Additionally, living artists such as William Wegman and Kara Walker have permanent works in the museum. SMoCA’s exhibitions are equally wide-ranging, including a show of Afghan war rugs, a Soleri retrospective, and murals by James Marshall, aka the graffiti artist Dalek.
