Savannah may not have the Southern music heritage of Nashville, Memphis, or New Orleans, but there’s still a local scene worth discovering. The Jinx is one of the best spots to start. Formerly known as Velvet Elvis, this rock-and-roll dive hosts live rock, metal, country, and hip-hop six nights a week. Located on an unpretentious corner across the street from City Market, a mixed-use area downtown, it stands out for its vaguely Gothic exterior. It’s not quite a dive bar, but it’s definitely in the ballpark. Some might regard the Jinx as unpolished, but most will appreciate that very quality, along with the open friendliness of the staff.
