Tierra Atacama Boutique Hotel & Spa
A picturesque outpost in the rugged Chilean outback, San Pedro de Atacama can be a place of extremes: sultry days give way to downright bone-chilling nights in winter (June to August), and somehow, the parched desert burgeons with wildlife both weird and wonderful (vicuñas, flamingos, and miniature deer). But with raw beauty as a constant, the town has become a haven for luxury all-inclusive hotels (at a time when the all-inclusive is once again having a moment in the sun). The 32-room Tierra Atacama Hotel & Spa is the newest design hotel to the region, built in 2008 by a Chilean architect who let the landscape dictate his design. As a result, the hypermodern design blends seamlessly with local Atacameñan flourishes and indigenous materials (including excavated stone), and the layout uses the regal snowcapped volcano as its grand centerpiece. In fact, every room at the hotel has a view of the 20,000-foot-tall glory.
