Just a 25-minute local train ride outside of Rome toward the coast is Ostia Antica, ancient Rome's port city. From the 4th century BC to the 5th century AD, Ostia Antica was a thriving commercial center whose population reached 60,00 people in its heyday. Today, the archaeological park is an incredible visit, and rivals Pompeii. A walk through the 100+ acres shows life as it was during its time as a Roman extension with existing structures of shops, apartment buildings, bath complexes, houses, temples, and precincts.
