In 2011, beer lovers Colin and Stephanie Bennett—the couple met in college while working at a brewery in Hawaii—moved to Westerly to open a family-style taproom specializing in gourmet, hand-rolled pretzels and American craft beer. The concept stuck, and five years later, a second Providence location was born. At Malted Barley, the 37 draft lines showcase small breweries from around the country, but pretzels remain the big seller. Highlights include a jalapeño-cheddar-stuffed pretzel with apricot butter and a chipotle pretzel stuffed with smoked Gouda and served with a side of honey mustard. The bakery doesn’t skimp on sweets, either: dreamy dessert pretzels are topped with cream-cheese frosting or served waffle-style with Nutella.
