Cathedral of Learning
The Cathedral of Learning is one of the city’s most recognizable landmarks, standing as a beacon to mark the University of Pittsburgh’s main campus in Oakland. In fact, it’s the tallest educational facility in the western hemisphere. It’s home to classrooms, a studio theater, a food court, and the incredible Nationality Rooms—classrooms constructed by local immigrants to mirror traditional learning environments in the countries that influenced Pittsburgh’s growth. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can climb the cathedral’s 36 stories to take in a picturesque view of the city. Outside, the late gothic revival cathedral is surrounded by sprawling, green lawns where students hang out, lay down picnics, and play sports, when the weather and their course loads permit.
