During the renovations of Paris in the late 1800s, few monuments constructed could equal the grandeur of the palatial Opera Garnier. With nearly 2,000 seats, the enormous theater is the official home to Paris's ballet, though opera performances are also produced here. The Chagall ceiling surrounding the chandelier, as well as the gilded Grand Foyer with its own dazzling chandeliers, are available for visits during the day when no shows are scheduled. It's well worth experiencing this architectural masterpiece to understand the opulence enjoyed by Parisians at the dawn of the Belle Epoque.
