Bibliophiles beware: it's all too easy to lose an entire day (or an entire paycheck) browsing through the "18 miles" of new and used books at this downtown institution. The labyrinthine, 55,000-square-foot space is not as organized as it could be (and you can't always rely on a ton of help from the blasé, grad-student staff), but getting lost in the stacks is half the fun. Bargain hunters will make a beeline for the $1 racks outside, though there are just as many options for more-serious collectors: we recently spotted a very fine first edition of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer in the rare-book room on the third floor—a steal at $8,500.
