The Beekman, which opened in 2016, is one of the Financial District’s best hotel debuts in years. The 1881 landmark building, which was once the location where Edgar Allen Poe wrote several novels, underwent a $500-million renovation to become the 287-room property. Guests are often blown away by the nine-story Victorian atrium and skylight, as well as Martin Brudnizki’s interior design. Each guest room features art and quirky furniture—think fringed lamps and oversized leather headboards. Additionally, the property’s restaurants and bar are exceptional, with two James Beard Award winners leading all three. Restaurateur Keith McNally spearheads the French-style bistro Augustine, while chef Tom Colicchio leads both Fowler & Wells and The Bar Room. The hotel also has its own art collection. Each piece is meant to draw on the property’s past and elicit the feeling of the American Romantic period. Among the featured artworks are site-specific pieces by artists like Jane Hammond and Patrick Jacobs.
