At its foundation, Shafer is a relationship between father and son, as are a number of Napa Valley wineries. John Shafer, who abandoned a successful career in the publishing industry, and his son Doug, who graduated from UC Davis, have been operating Shafer together since 1983. With resident winemaker Elias Fernandez, they own seventy-nine acres of vineyards in the Stags Leap District. From these vines comes Hillside Select, one of the world’s most allocated cabernet sauvignons. Modern in design with gray slate, the winery practices sustainable farming and generates all of its own power by way of solar panels.
