Cantina culture has a long history in Mexico, and you can learn all about it in the capital's Museum of Tequila and Mezcal (or MUTEM), which is located on Plaza Garibaldi in the Centro Histórico neighborhood. After making your way through the exhibits, be sure to exit not through the gift shop, but through the cantina. This spirits museum has a full, working bar, with dozens of tequilas and mezcals waiting to be tasted. Order them straight or in a cocktail, and strike up a conversation with the bartender to learn more local lore. Then, head out to the plaza and be serenaded by mariachis. Band members congregate in Plaza Garibaldi, waiting to be hired for parties, weddings, and other special occasions.
