Hope Street Hotel
A once-dreary waterfront city recently dubbed a European Capital of Culture, Liverpool has always prided itself on being out of the mainstream. The Hope Street Hotel is in the Georgian Quarter, near several repertory theaters. The 48 rooms in the converted furniture store are spare and airy, and warmed by polished radiant-heat floors; exposed century-old brick walls are set off by crisp white linens. The restaurant in the 19th-century carriage works downstairs is one of Liverpool’s best—try sage-rubbed veal with Puy lentils or Scottish salmon with potted shrimp.
