Little Compton is worth visiting for two reasons: beautifully intact 17th-century homes and the Commons Lunch, a cash-only diner specializing in clam fritters, fish-and-chips, and lobster rolls. The presentation is unfussy, as are the prices. Just don’t come here expecting high-concept décor or an innovative cocktail list: this is solid, fresh, home-style seafood (non–seafood lovers should order the Johnny Cakes, star of the daily breakfast menu). Just 30 miles from Newport, the Commons Lunch is a great mid-afternoon stop-off point while you explore Rhode Island’s remote southeastern corner.
