AlmaLusa Baixa & Chiado Hotel
A 16th-century arsenal for Portuguese caravels—small sailing ships—has been upgraded to this 28-room boutique hotel without losing its sense of place and history. Original stone walls and floors, azulejos (ceramic tiles), and creaky wooden stairs pop up around every turn, but it's the pieces that remain from the building's other past as a wine merchant, barber shop, and Moroccan showroom that set it apart from other Baixa hotels (book room 26 for a wine-service counter turned bathroom). Contemporary rooms are proudly Portuguese: Delta coffee machines, Castebel amenities, Lima Meyer towels, and Hotelar linens.
