5 Kabasakal Cad., Istanbul, , Turkey

By the late 1970s, this former manor of a prominent Ottoman official was in such a state of decay that it was demolished and rebuilt from scratch. Meticulously following the original plan, the 19 rooms were redecorated in the style of a 19th-century winter palace, with hand-painted Iznik tilework, ornate wood wardrobes, brass beds, and antique carpets. The garden at the back is particularly popular in warm weather and features colorful flowers, tall trees, and a central fountain in pink porphyry. The hotel has hosted a number of distinguished guests, including J. Paul Gauthier, Rudolf Nureyev, Larry King, and Rachel Weisz.
