Off the beaten path

Easily visible from the mainland, yet miles away in spirit, the small archipelago of the Westman Islands promises to be even more quaint and isolated than the rest of your Iceland foray. The population is clustered in a village on the largest island, Heimaey, half-buried under a lava flow from an eruption about a 50 years ago. Visitors can see a suburban-style home partially dipped in solid rock, or seek out the massive puffin colony that nests at Stórhofdi—reportedly the windiest place in Europe—during the summer.
