Quirky, family-owned hole-in-the-wall Irifune is one of the best finds (and best values), Japanese or otherwise, in Waikiki. The petite space is an eclectic jumble of traditional Japanese masks and posters, fishing nets (with money thrown in for luck), snapshots of friends (including fan Sigourney Weaver), and glow-in-the-dark stars on the ceiling. Opt for the ahi, prepared in a variety of styles: seared with garlic-caper sauce, as tartare mixed with avocado and capers served over a rice-ball pancake, or in the house specialty, marinated in garlic sauce with a hint of chile and lightly pan-fried. Another favorite is the panko-breaded fried tofu with ginger-teriyaki sauce. Everything is explained well by the amiable waitstaff.
