On an ordinary day, this green is a great place for people-watching: Elderly citizens practice Tai Chi in the mornings; droves of Southeast Asian domestic helpers congregate here on Sunday, their only day off in the week. On a more solemn note, lots of history was made at this park. The public space is the site of many a vigils commemorating the 1989 Tiananmen Square Massacre. The Umbrella Movement, part of the civil protests that shook Hong Kong in 2014, also took place near this park. The recreational area serves as a reminder of the city's ongoing struggle to obtain true democracy.
