Bamboo Restaurant & Gallery
Some of the state’s best pot stickers (plump with chicken, basil, cilantro, ginger, and peanuts) and baby back ribs (tender and smoky, barbecued in spicy passion fruit or pineapple sauce) are on the menu at this relaxed restaurant on the northern tip of the Big Island in the old sugar town of Hawi. In a former hotel and dry goods store dating from 1911, light, inventive meals are prepared with fresh isle products—the fruits and vegetables come from local families, the fish from local fishermen—and are a big step above most of the typical tourist fare. Don’t miss the passion fruit margarita, invented here. The gracious waitresses often break into an impromptu hula in the middle of a dining room.
