The Schoolhouse at Mutianyu
Launched by an American and Chinese husband-and-wife team nearly 10 years ago, the Schoolhouse is named after the abandoned primary school that now serves as its restaurant. The entire property was a former tile factory near the Great Wall. It's made up of nine free-standing former farmers' homes or village shops transformed into guest quarters with reclaimed materials and decorated with Chinese antiques. Rooms (ranging from one- to four-bedrooms) are loft-like with exposed brick and stone walls, amenities like rainforest showers and outdoor grills, and views of the Great Wall.
