Before St. Bart’s became what it is today, there was Eden Rock—the island’s first hotel, built on a tiny, rocky outcropping back in 1950. The guests then were Greta Garbo and Howard Hughes. Today, they include fashionable New Yorkers, multi-generational groups from Brazil, and the occasional celeb or two (hello, Jessica Alba). All come to Eden Rock for the prime location on St.-Jean beach, the see-and-be-seen vibe, and the insanely good food, courtesy of chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten and his protégée, Eric Desbordes. Order the black truffle pizza with a glass of Bordeaux at Sand Bar, or grab a La Corne “On the Rocks” cocktail of rum, Chambord, fresh raspberries, mint, and cranberry juice at the Rock Bar. Though the property has expanded over the years to include 34 contemporary suites, cottages, and now, villas, we have a soft spot for the 10 legacy rooms—the original digs on the rock.
