Auckland bars may have muddled along in a generic kind of way in their early days, but they’ve since stepped up and developed individual character and personality. Mixologists are working with their own house-made sodas and playing around with infused syrups, and wine lists are increasingly representing organic and biodynamic makers. The craft beer scene has never been more vibrant. While most Auckland bars and clubs offer a bit of all of the above, there has been a recent opening of specialty bars such as the single-spirit-focused Gin Room; Coley & Punch, which packs just that with a selection of more than 150 whiskies; and Rockefeller Champagne & Oyster bar, which fizzes with more than 45 varieties. As a contrast to these polished city nightlife options, there are quirky characters such as Peach Pit, where you can order a rice-wine Russian or Portuguese green wine alongside your baby octopus with fennel, kimchi and purple potato.
