This Quirky Airstream Resort in Oregon Comes With Vintage Trailers, a Fire Pit, and Complimentary Bike Rentals

The Vintages is the coolest way to experience Oregon wine country.

Napa might get more love when it comes to world-renowned wine regions, but journey a little further north to Oregon’s wonderful Willamette Valley for an experience second to none. On a recent summertime trip, I was lucky enough to stay at The Vintages, a trailer resort smack in the middle of wine country. Spread over 14 beautiful acres, this unique accommodation offered the perfect home base to explore the destination.

In the Willamette Valley, pinot noir is king (though the area is increasingly being recognized for its sparkling wine as well). This grape is known to be fussy and hard to grow, demanding a specific cool climate and reflecting even small changes in its growing site. The Willamette Valley currently boasts 12 AVAs (or American Viticultural Areas). To put it simply, an AVA helps wine lovers understand where their vino is coming from as it’s used in labeling. It refers to what region produced the grapes. To earn AVA distinction, an area must show specific climatic and/or geographic features that make it stand out from other places. The Vintages is located in pretty Dayton, Oregon, close to the Dundee Hills AVA and Eola-Amity Hills AVA.

Location, Location, Location

Dayton lies in the heart of the Willamette Valley, and though it's not extremely well-known, this small town is becoming a wine destination all on its own. All in all, there are more than 700 wineries and vineyards in the Willamette Valley, about two-thirds of the state's total grape bounty. The following three offer excellent access from The Vintages.

Durant at Red Ridge Farms has a large tasting room, olive groves, estate gardens, a private, open-air cabana experience, and fantastic lodging options for those interested in a vineyard stay. Next, Remy Wines is one of the best vineyards in the U.S., with a 1900s farmhouse tasting room for its Old World-style Italian wines. Finally, the Stoller Family Estate, a Willamette Valley stalwart, is another option close to The Vintages. It provides two levels of tastings — Classic and Estate — in its popular Dayton tasting room.

Amenities Abound

Beyond its prime location in the Willamette Valley, this nostalgic resort features some cool communal amenities. My favorite was the fire pit, where I utilized a s'mores kit purchased from the general store. It was a lovely way to end a day of wine tasting as I was able to meet fellow guests and bond over a sweet treat. There’s also a fitness center, pool, clubhouse, speedy Wi-Fi, outdoor grills, and complimentary cruiser bikes for exploring the resort.

Terrific Trailers

The main attractions at The Vintages are the trailers themselves: 36 fully restored and custom-fabricated accommodations dating as far back as 1947. Not every camper has a set decor theme, but several stand out for their retro vibes or modern decadence.

The most luxurious offering, the spacious Spartan Royal Mansion leans more toward the contemporary and bohemian side. It even has a seasonal open-air soaking tub set into its ample outdoor gathering space. The 36-foot-long trailer hails back to 1956 and has been gutted to resemble a more traditional guest room with a king-size bed.

A more petite pick, the 1958 Oasis is perfect for two adults. This cat-themed stay includes a full-size bed with a retro dinette. And last but not least is the Neutron Couples trailer. The ideal setting for a romantic getaway, this one is unique for its massive indoor soaking tub. Beyond these three options, there are 33 more trailers sure to fit every traveler's need (and charm them along the way).
