That “battery low” notification on your phone is so frustrating, especially when it feels like your phone was just fully charged. Apple and Samsung both tout extended battery life with their new phones, but that isn’t always the case. Settings you’re not even aware of could be draining your phone, even when you’re not using it. Here’s some of the secret ways your phone is losing energy, and how to solve them.
1. Updating your iPhone
After updating your iPhone, you might notice that your battery life is a lot shorter than usual. It’s not just you, many iPhone users have reported issues with their phone’s battery after an update. The main issue is that updating the operating system can also restore apps and settings back to their original configurations, so if you already had your phone optimized to spare your battery, you’ll have to go back and change all of your preferences again. Although it may seem like a daunting and unnecessary task, at least it’ll get your phone to last through the day again.
2. Apps With “Background Activity”
While you’re checking your settings, take a look at what apps are eating up the most of your phone’s battery. If some of the highest-draining apps are listing “background activity,” you can turn off background app refresh, and only allow the apps to refresh when you’re using them, which will spare you some energy. If you don’t need your email constantly updated either, you can change your mail settings to fetch data manually, instead of constantly refreshing for new mail.
3. Using Location Services
Allowing your phone to constantly track your location can also drain your battery, since it’s constantly having to update and connect with the GPS. Turning off location services, or switching your app settings so that they only check your location while you’re using the app can keep your phone from draining as quickly.
4. Leaving Bluetooth On All Day
Although it can be tempting to leave your Bluetooth on all day to keep your Fitbit updated or your music blasting from your speakers, it’s a surefire way to have your phone at zero percent before you head home. Switch Bluetooth off whenever you can to save battery.
Using Wifi instead of cellular data also saves battery, according to Apple, so connect to wifi wherever you can. Additionally, if you’re in an area with weak or no signal, switch your phone to airplane mode, as having your phone constantly straining to try and find a signal can deplete your phone.
5. Having a Very Bright Screen
The most obvious setting that could be killing your phone is the brightness. Turn your display’s brightness down whenever your phone is running low, and use the auto-brightness feature to allow your phone to adapt to the lighting around you. Using low power mode will also automatically dim your display.
Another way your display could be draining your battery is if it’s constantly being lit up with notifications. Turn off notifications for apps you don’t need to keep your phone alive longer and give yourself some more peace of mind.
