You Can Buy a Private Island in the Scottish Highlands for the Price of a Single Apartment in New York City
For the first time in 700 years, this private island in the Scottish Highlands is up for sale.
If the idea of a remote vacation home is sounding wholly appealing right now, you might be in luck: A secluded private island in the Scottish Highlands just hit the market. Inchconnachan Island, on the western shores of Loch Lomond, is now up for the sale. The listing, by Savills, says offers for the 103-acre island should start at £500,000 ($630,150) — which is what you might pay to own a one-bedroom apartment in a city like Los Angeles or New York City.
Loch Lomond, the largest lake in Scotland, is the southernmost part of the Scottish Highlands and falls within Trossachs National Park. It’s just 30 miles from Glasgow (a 50-minute drive), and 80 miles (a two-hour drive) from Edinburgh.
The private island — which, as the Savills' listing says, includes “numerous secluded bays” — comes with 3,854 metres (2.4 miles) of shorefront real estate. Accessible only by boat, residents of Inchconnachan Island will sail from the quaint nearby village of Luss to reach the island, which sits closest to Inchtavannach Island (to the west) and Inchmoan Island (to the south).
The island was just put up for sale by the Colquhoun family, who has owned this private island since the 1300s. A summer escape for the Colquhouns that has been passed down for generations, the only structure currently left standing on the property was built in 1920 and most recently belonged to Countess of Arran Fiona Gore (née Colquhoun), who passed away in 2013. The building, no longer fit for residents, is set to be replaced by a modern vacation home and boathouse.
“The Estate obtained planning consent in 2015 for the construction of a wonderful replacement lodge, boathouse, and pier,” says Savills. “The planning consent was renewed in 2018.”
There’s no denying that buying this remote Scottish Highlands property won’t translate to immediate luxury — it will take work. However, the potential for a lavish, legacy-in-the-making private island home just an hour from the city is there. The buyer will ultimately sign on to finish building the new residence — featuring a vacation home, boathouse, and pier. Beyond completing the new property, there is endless opportunity for building on the shores of Loch Lomond and restoring this palatial family island to its former glory.
