Jen Atkin gave us a look at her new Calpak luggage collection — and what's inside.
Celebrity hairstylist and Ouai Haircare founder Jen Atkin is known for making waves — both in the hair of her loyal A-list clientele and in the beauty industry itself. And now, she’s coming for luggage, too. Atkin, who refers to traveling as her “full-time job,” is often on the road looking after the locks of Kendall and Kylie Jenner, Bella and Gigi Hadid, Chrissy Teigen, the Kardashians, need we go on? In spending so much time with her suitcases, she noticed a gap in the market and, ever the problem-solver, set out to fill it.
Today, Atkin's personality-packed Calpak luggage collection launches exclusively at Nordstrom. All four suitcase sizes are available in four radiant metallics: gold, pink, red, and black. The line is technically luxe, too, with a TSA-locked, quick-latch closure system, premium Hinomoto “silent run” spinner wheels, and organizational compartments with quality YKK zippers inside. It's obvious no detail went overlooked.
And even though the exteriors are made with textured polycarbonate that's unlikely to show wear, each piece comes with a clear, protective cover and tons of fun stickers to outfit it with. Think: a glass of rosé, a crispy fried chicken leg, and a warning sign that reads, “Caution: Emotional Baggage.” Atkin wanted to make the baggage claim exciting for once.
“Crowdsourcing was an instrumental part in creating my collection,” she told T+L via email. “I showed my followers tons of different options for colors, textures, asked them about stickers, basically every piece of my luggage was created with their needs in mind.”
So, we had to know, what does she pack in said luggage? We asked that and much more — in-flight routines, borrowed travel tips, plane hair tricks — below.
T+L: What has a life of frequent travel taught you about packing?
Jen Atkin: “How to pack more efficiently for sure! I always check the weather where I’m going first and pull my outfits for each day so I don’t end up over-packing. I always bring a power strip for each country I travel to because finding plugs in rooms is so annoying! I also travel with a travel steamer for each country. And I always get water from the gym when I check in so I don’t have to pay for it.”
Do you have any go-to in-flight routines?
“I do — I always clean all the surfaces with Honest Co. antibacterial wipes to kill any germs, with all the travel I do I cannot afford to get sick! I also love to use Summer Fridays' Jet Lag Mask and a Verso Deep Hydration Mask. And I always bring a Barefoot Dreams blanket for each flight.”
Post-flight, what’s a simple way to bring hair back to life?
“It actually starts in-flight; I always bring a full-size pillow with my Slip Silk Pillowcase which keeps my hair frizz-free and shiny while I nap on the plane. And I always bring a travel dry shampoo foam to freshen up my roots.”
What are some of the every-trip products or tools we’d find in your toiletry bag?
“My Dyson Airwrap is my latest essential for travel. It comes with everything I need to style my hair so I don’t have to bring multiple tools. I also can’t live without Ouai Dry Shampoo Foam, KNC Star Eye Masks, Epione Firm & Fade Face Cream, and Mara Universal Face Oil. I also love my new Bose Noise-masking Sleepbuds that are uniquely designed for sleep. They don’t stream music or have acoustic noise cancellation. Instead, they use pre-loaded, soothing masking sounds to cover up unwanted nighttime noises so you can get to sleep and stay asleep.”
We can see from your Instagram alone that you’re often on the road with celebrity clients. Have you borrowed any good travel tips from them?
“That jet lag is a state of mind and coffee is your best friend.”
