When it comes to flying comfortably, everyone focuses on neck pillows. But as someone who’s flown several hundred thousand miles this year alone, I’m here to tell you the real star of the show is compression socks.

You see, when you sit on airplanes for long periods of time, a phenomenon called gravitational edema occurs and your feet and ankles tend to swell. Compression stockings can help stave off that swelling by applying slight pressure to the legs, helping to stimulate blood flow.

Beyond the science, I can personally attest that wearing them makes a big difference. As a freelance travel writer, I’ve been to 11 countries (so far) this year alone, and that’s not even counting domestic travel. I also happen to only be five feet tall, which comes with its own challenges while flying. While tall people have the issue of not having enough leg room, my legs tend to cramp because my feet don’t exactly touch the floor. This makes my entire lower half ache about an hour into every flight, which means I have to keep getting up, disturbing the person next to me, and take a walk up and down the aisle.

However, after purchasing the highly-rated Physix Gear Sport Compression Socks, this issue has become a thing of the past for me. These socks have made flying way more comfortable for me, but the benefits of these socks can definitely be felt by travelers of all heights.

The socks are crafted with gradient compression, which offers targeted foot to calf muscle support. This compression can help boost lower leg circulation, which the company says can deliver an “enhanced oxygen blood flow” throughout the body. That, in turn, can help you recover flights (or workouts) faster. And I’m not the only one who loves them either — over 10,000 reviewers have left the socks five-star ratings on Amazon.

“I bought two pairs, one for me and one for my partner, as we were going to be flying from the US to Europe, and it was recommended for health and circulation purposes that we use compression socks for the flights,” one shopper wrote. “The compression grading I feel is spot-on.”

“It’s truly a great product and I won’t be flying again, even across the country, without these socks,” another added. “Oh, and they look awesome! The color gradient is a nice touch and a good way to ensure you’ve lined them up properly.”

Want to try them on your next flight to see how they work for you? Go ahead and pick up a pair or two — there are nine colors to choose from, and they’re all under $20. I promise you’ll never want to fly without them again either.
