Seasonal affective disorder (SAD) is very real in many places around the world. Come fall and winter, or more specifically Nov. 1 if you're stateside, there are fewer hours of daylight during the day. It's harder to get up in the morning and harder to stay awake past 4 p.m. And with many of us now working from home, it's more important than ever to be prepared ahead of winter.

Happy lamps, SAD lamps, therapy lamps, whatever you choose to call them are a masterful solution for this age-old problem of seasonal affective disorder. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, light therapy has been used since around the 1980s to "replace the diminished sunshine of the fall and winter months using daily exposure to bright, artificial light."

"Light boxes filter out the ultraviolet rays," the NIH states, "and require 20 to 60 minutes of exposure to 10,000 lux of cool-white fluorescent light, an amount that is about 20 times greater than ordinary indoor lighting." Benefits of these lamps come from sitting in front of one daily, especially first thing in the morning, "from early fall until spring."
