Street Style: Travel Fashion Tips from Fashion Week
We’re always on the lookout for the most comfortable—but stylish—outfits to wear when in transit, whether by car, bus, taxi, ship, or foot. So, what did we notice trending for travel wear this winter? Long coats, heavy furs, thick turtlenecks, and lots of non-descript, oversized scarfs. Small bags have replaced the once trendy custom of carrying around a five-pound tote; again, this goes back to the value that’s being placed on practicality, rather than what’s “of-the-moment.” Utilitarianism in itself seems to be becoming more and more of a trend.
Before we get a glimpse of the warm—or warmer—weather appropriate looks coming off the streets in Milan, Paris and London in the coming weeks, we’ve rounded up the best outfits that we would love to travel in, as seen at the Paris Couture shows and New York Fashion Week this year.
Keep Warm (Like an Angel)
Victoria’s Secret Angel Sara Sampaio waits for a taxi in the streets of NYC, dressed impeccably for a mid-winter trip, or a night out in a blizzard. Just slip into your coziest leggings and pair them with a pair of over-the-knee boots, like Stuart Weitzman’s Highland, seen here. Throw on your biggest, furriest coat and a beanie—and just like that, you’re chic—but warm.
Olivia Palermo shows us how to dress for a first-class upgrade, sporting sailor-inspired trousers, a cozy sweater, fur vest and tortoise-shell shades in Paris.
All Black Everything
In Paris, model Elena Perminova waits for an Uber looking impossibly chic. How to achieve her look? Invest in a great pair of black combat boots, slide into your tightest skinnies, and layer with a long coat. Throw your hair up into a topknot, and add a black choker for a little sex appeal. (A little Saint Laurent never hurt anybody, either.)
Dare to be Different
Want to know the trick to hailing a cab during a blizzard in NYC? Dress like this. Okay, maybe not—but Victoria’s Secret Angel Romee Strijd makes a serious case for overalls with this buttoned-up look. The Dutch stunner somehow manages to make overalls look sexy and chic—and cold weather appropriate—by layering with a shearling-lined jacket, and pairing a collared shirt underneath.
Model Binx Walton proves that a great black coat and a glass of champagne can cover up just about anything underneath—something to keep in mind for your next "I’m-not-taking-off-these-pajamas" coffee run.
Pumped Up Kicks
Ready for Takeoff
Russian model Sasha Luss demonstrates what the ultimate travel uniform should look like, using the streets of Paris as her runway (read: slip-off ankle boots and multiple layers).
No, your eyes aren't deceiving you—that really is Victoria Beckham wearing sneakers. The notorious higher-than-high heel lover was seen leaving her NYC hotel in one of the comfiest (and most travel-friendly) outfits we’ve ever seen. Cashmere turtleneck? Check. Loose-fitted trousers? Check. Comfy shoes? You know it.
No Sleeves? No Problem
When you’re coming straight off the plane (after a presumably cross-continental flight, if you’re a Kardashian-Jenner), sunglasses are key. Kendall Jenner exhibits the perfect uniform for people whose body temperatures tend to fluctuate, opting for a sleeveless coat, black leggings, and slip-on boots.
Yes, it is possible to stop traffic on Park Avenue—just ask Kayture’s Kristina Bazan, who did just that in flared jeans, platforms, and a nautical peacoat by Tommy Hilfiger.
Smart, but Simple
What is the ultimate Parisian winter uniform, one might ask? Blue skinnies, a turtleneck, a long trench and a simple scarf, as seen on French model-turned-actress Aymeline Valade. And, as the runway fixture displays, don’t be afraid to wear socks with your loafers—it’s cold!
Embrace Athletic Wear
Always dressed to the nines, it may come as a surprise to some to see Alexa Chung in tennis shoes and blue denim. But it’s 2016, and sneakers—like these Van’s Sk8-Hi Slims—are as fashionable (and as practical, especially in walking cities like New York) as ever. To avoid coming across underdressed, pair them with a long, wool coat, and skinny jeans.
Keep it Casual
Supermodels of the moment Gigi Hadid and Kendall Jenner teach us exactly what to wear for a bus ride: leggings, a cozy sweatshirt, and an extra, lightweight layer on top. As the reality stars exhibit here, you can never go wrong with a good bomber jacket.
