The hot days of summer may still be upon us but it can often feel like airplanes are in their own climate zones. In fact, for people like me who are always cold, getting ready to board a plane in the summer requires the same amount of effort and preparation as a trip to the Russian tundra and the Caribbean at the same time. Basically, it includes layers — lots of layers — even if the temperature outside is in the upper 80s and 90s.
And while there is a legitimate reason why pilots keep temperatures in the cabin low, this comes as little consolation. The truth is, the only thing you can do to prepare is pack some extra clothing in your carry-on bag. Your best bet? A warm and lightweight cardigan.
I always prefer oversized, chunky pieces because they are not only cozy but also look cool when paired with my go-to travel outfit (a T-shirt and jeans). You can never go wrong with classic colors such as white, black, and grey, and naturally soft fabrics like cotton, linen, alpaca, or merino wool. But since it’s (almost) summer, you can also pull off a bold hue like yellow or pink. After all, a little color never hurt anybody.
If you travel more often for work than pleasure and can’t really wear anything that’s too out there, opt for a cardigan with a slightly more fitted silhouette in a neutral color and a fun detail such as a bow or a floral print.
