On World Water Day, a Reminder That Clean Water Shouldn't be a Luxury
On March 22, 1993, the United Nations founded World Water Day, 24 hours dedicated to spreading the word on the challenges facing global access to clean water.
To do our part,Travel + Leisure is teaming up with the Global Water Challenge and WaterHealth International to help bring water to people in need around the world—specifically in India and across Africa.
These organizations have made great strides to make water accessible to millions who would otherwise drink, wash, and bathe in unsafe water. Since launching in 1995, WaterHealth International has provided clean drinking water to more than 5 million people, with hopes to reach 100 million people by 2020. The organization also works to empower women through providing work opportunities and education for young women. The Global Water Challenge connects organizations and brands across the world to launch successful campaigns around this issue.
Last month, we launched a CharityBuzz auction to help raise money to maintain and create clean water stations in areas of need. We also sent photographer Pankaj Anand to document what Dr. Water, a subsidiary of WaterHealth International, has been doing to provide clean water and sanitation education to residents of Hyderabad. Read on for our favorite photographs from the trip.
