Museum: Natural History Museum
This grand museum showcasing history, science, and art celebrates its 100th anniversary this year with the opening of a new permanent exhibit, “Becoming L.A.,” which chronicles the city’s history with iconic artifacts: everything from a 19th-century monk’s sandal to 1930s Charlie Chaplin costume pieces to a 1950s Eames chair.
Nature: Lake Hollywood Reservoir
The pedestrian trail around this picturesque reservoir in the Hollywood Hills reopened this year after a seven-year closure. It’s lovely for a late summer or fall stroll beneath the oak, pine, and eucalyptus trees and affords fabulous views of the Hollywood Sign, which turned 90 this year.
Neighborhood: Angelino Heights
With its concentration of charming Victorian homes, this hilly neighborhood between Echo Park and Downtown is especially inviting in the run-up to Halloween, when the 19th-century façades make for a spooky backdrop to decorations (you’ll find homes used in the filming of Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” video and the TV show.
Performance: “For the Record” at Rockwell Table & Stage
Film soundtracks are the inspiration for the cabaret show at this spirited supper club, where the songbook is music used in movies by famed directors including Quentin Tarantino, John Hughes, and Martin Scorsese. Seasoned stage and screen performers fill out the cast (Rumer Willis appears in this fall’s Baz Luhrmann installment).
