Travel Diaries: Designer Rebecca Minkoff Takes on Hong Kong
Since launching her namesake label more than a decade ago, Rebecca Minkoff has found a cult following among millennials who swear by her edgy leather handbags, easy-to-wear dresses, and colorful accessories and footwear. It’s no surprise that she’s poised to corner the trend-driven Asian market—especially with the launch of her first overseas freestanding boutique in Hong Kong on April 15.
To celebrate the store’s opening, Minkoff traveled to the Chinese culture capital for a quick, three-day trip that was jam-packed with shopping excursions, explorations of the city’s hottest design hubs, and no shortage of sights, both traditional and contemporary. Here, she recounts some of her favorite moments exclusively for T+L.
"One of the most striking characteristics of Hong Kong is the main island skyline. I stayed at the InterContinental Hong Kong, in the Tsim Sha Tsui area, which has the most spectacular views of Central Hong Kong’s skyscrapers, harbor, and mountain range in the distance."
"I love any opportunity to visit a sacred landmark when traveling. The Man Mo Temple is a must-see within the Tai Po Market on the central island. I also love the layered architecture in this part of Hong Kong—the composition of traditional and contemporary buildings is remarkable."
"Being inside the temple was such an alluring and peaceful experience. I fell in love with the vivid shades of red as seen on these lanterns—the tranquility of the space was transcendent."
"I always make it a point to jog outside on every trip I take. It’s a great way to explore my surroundings. The Chinese Garden in Kowloon Park is one of the most serene areas to escape from the hustle and bustle of the city."
"The primary colors of this building were extremely eye-catching amongst the contemporary architecture in Central Hong Kong. Buildings like these are a constant source of inspiration for me."
"A visit to Lane Crawford is a must—one of my favorite elements of travel is being able to bring home decorative trinkets that create a lasting memory of each trip I take."
"Exploring the city streets is one of the best ways to experience the local culture first-hand. I loved this moment while walking around on a beautiful day in Central. The colors in the city are so vivid and energizing."
"PMQ is an art center that feels like a modern bazaar with local designers, interior décor shops, art galleries, cooking classes, and more. I spent a few hours walking in and out of these little shops, admiring the extraordinary craftsmanship. It was a big source of inspiration."
"I loved this shop! You could select your favorite slab of marble, and have whatever you wanted carved out of it. These eyeglass frames were amazing—talk about one-of-a-kind."
"This home décor shop at PMQ was celebrating the year of the sheep. I could easily picture these luxurious stools in my showroom—the transitional style and neutral color palette would really complement my designs."
"It was a gorgeous day outside, so I decided to take a ride back to my hotel on the Star Ferry in Victoria Harbor. It was so refreshing to feel the breeze and the sunshine, not to mention a relaxing method of transportation and an easy way to sightsee."
"Eating spicy foods is one of my favorite ways to indulge. This spicy Dan Dan noodle dish at Crystal Jade was beyond delicious—you can really see the heat in this photo!"
"This trip was so special because it was the opening of my first freestanding overseas store, located in Ocean Terminal at Harbour City, the largest shopping mall in Hong Kong. I was thrilled to celebrate with my international team, and honored to have a presence at such an iconic shopping destination."
"Hong Kong is a key market for my brand, and I felt so proud to open what I hope will be the first of many stores in China. My spring collection looks beautiful in this photo—it was truly a surreal moment for me to see the product so beautifully displayed."
"To celebrate the store opening, we brought in Tanya Pirate, a very talented local artist, who beautifully illustrated guests at the party. It was such a fun way to engage with my customers; I really felt their enthusiasm and support."
"I took this on my final night in Hong Kong. The skyline is absolutely magical in the evenings. It was the most breathtaking view to take in at the end of an exhilarating trip. Next stop, Tokyo!"
