Oktoberfest is much more than an opportunity to drink Oktoberfestbier—call it by any other name and locals will call you out—although, that is the constant among all of the event’s activities. Here's a little history: The event is actually held to commemorate the marriage between Bavarian Pring Ludwig and his wife Princess Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen back in 1810; a wedding reception, of sorts. Today, the 16-day event is full of cultural references, regional eats, and amazing outfits (in short: much more than you would have seen in the first anniversaries).
The 182nd celebration kicked off on Saturday, September 19th and the party will keep on going until Sunday, October 4th. As expected, the first weekend was full of parades, incredible costumes, and frothing mugs of beer. Here's a look at the weekend's festivities, for those of us celebrating from afar.
