Travel Diary: Jewelry Designers Lizzie Fortunato in Charleston, South Carolina
In town to celebrate an exclusive collaboration with Hampden Clothing, the popular Southern retailer owned by Stacy Smallwood—a local design maven, who stocks fashion-forward labels like Marni, Simone Rocha, Alexander Wang, and Proenza Schouler—the designers found some down time to explore the city.
Joined by friends Max Osterweis and Erin Beatty of Suno (who also created a capsule collection for Hampden Clothing) and Blair Eadie of the fashion blog Atlantic Pacific, the Fortunato sisters made stops at Sugar Bakery for cupcakes, the Commons for unique housewares, and Leon’s Oyster Shop for a seafood lunch.
Here, they highlight some of their favorite memories, as well as some exclusive new Lizzie Fortunato designs.
“Blair Eadie of Atlantic Pacific attended Hampden’s party, and we had such a blast exploring Charleston with her. The city is filled with such great color and design. It’s historically beautiful, but also such an inspiring creative hub. We kept meeting restaurateurs and creative types who had relocated to Charleston from New York City.”
“We love discovering little shops in Charleston. This one, the Commons, was a favorite: it’s petite, immaculately designed, and filled with gorgeous housewares, all of which are handmade in the States.”
“Copper vessels, wood bookends, and ceramics—all beautifully laid out inside the Commons.”
“One of our favorite cards that we picked up at Mac and Murphy; the envelope liner is everything!”
“One of the most delicious meals we had in Charleston was at Leon’s Oyster Shop. The shrimp roll is incredible, and there’s nothing like sitting outside at this friendly joint after a full day of exploring on King Street.”
“Tara Guérard is an incredible Charleston-based event planner, who threw a spectacular dinner at her home in the historic Battery neighborhood to celebrate Hampden Clothing x SUNO and Lizzie Fortunato. She tented her cobblestone driveway and served delicious food. The atmosphere was stunning! Here she is in her courtyard.”
“Celebrity stylist Kate Foley at Tara Guérard’s soiree.”
“This is an earring that we designed exclusively for Hampden Clothing. The contrast of the edgy onyx and amazonite stones with the feminine crystal is really unique. We want to wear these with everything this summer.”
“This is another exclusive piece for our Hampden event. We re-worked a popular style from a few seasons ago in white leather. It’s a perfect, fresh update for the warm weather ahead.”
