Lucy Laucht—you may know her as @lucylaucht on Instagram—lives the life you wish you had: in 2016, she quit her job in New York City to explore the United States with her husband in a 1985 Westfalia. Previously, Laucht was a senior manager on the digital development and social media team at J. Crew, but she’s had the itch to travel since she took off on a one-year backpacking trip through Europe after graduating college in 2007.
“I went to Central and South America, and then Australia, New Zealand, and Asia,” she says. “While I was in Asia, I met my husband, who is in the car with me hearing the story again. He says, ‘Best time of our lives.’ We actually met on a beach in Bali, had some noodles, and we ended up traveling together for a few months.” After spending some time living in Australia—where her husband is from—they made their way to New York City, originally with the thought that they’d stay a year. Six years and countless adventures later, they find themselves living from a van and seeing the world in an entirely new way. “New York is a good places to travel from—it opened up a lot of the states for us, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Europe all being a little closer,” Laucht says.
Her currently domestic adventure is currently at the top of her “Best Trips Ever” list: “We just had no idea when we were living in New York of what was out there in the States,” she says. “We’ve been blown away by the geography and the culture of each different state—you can go from mountains to ocean and desert so quickly. It’s been awesome to get under the skin of the country we’re living in just a little bit.”
When it comes to her bucket list, there’s no shortage of destinations. “India—I haven’t been, and I need to go from both a photography and to experience the culture,” Laucht says. “I would also like to go to the Himalayas, and see more of Europe. I went back to Italy this past summer and it was so cool. I would love to go back to Italy and see the coasts.”
