The experience of sleeping under the stars at the foot of some the country’s most stunning landscapes — from red-rock canyons to rugged, snow-covered peaks — shouldn’t be limited to those who are willing sleep on a flimsy camping mat and huddle around a campfire. At least that’s the thinking behind Ulum Resorts, a new hospitality brand that will open its first location outside Canyonlands National Park in Moab, Utah, in spring 2023.

Ulum joins the well-established (and beloved) Under Canvas family, which has long been welcoming travelers to their upscale, safari-style accommodations near sought-after national parks, including Yellowstone, Zion, Glacier, and Acadia. Ulum builds off the success of Under Canvas by elevating the experience to include additional, hotel-style amenities — including full-service dining, dipping pools, and high-end tent suites outfitted with contemporary West Elm furnishings, luxurious Parachute linens and robes, and Aesop bath products.

“The addition of Ulum Moab broadens the appeal and will attract new guests to our portfolio of safari-inspired locations, as well as loyal Under Canvas guests looking to experience a different side of Moab,” Matthew Gaghen, CEO of Under Canvas & Ulum, told Travel + Leisure.

And while the upscale Ulum accommodations may be a huge draw for travelers, the real showstopper is the location. Ulum Moab will be set on 200 acres of desert landscape and surrounded on three sides by eastern Utah’s iconic red-rock cliffs. The property will open to expansive views of the park, and the stunning Looking Glass Rock, a natural rock arch, is just steps away.

“Moab is one of America’s preeminent outdoor destinations, attracting visitors from around the globe. We love the Moab area for its broad range of incredible outdoor activities — amazing slick rock mountain biking, exceptional hiking in Canyonlands National Park, white-water rafting the Colorado River, and many more bucket-list outdoor activities,” Gaghen said.

The dramatic desert landscape of the park, with its remote canyons, towering rock pinnacles, and roaring Colorado River sets the tone for adventure, while Ulum Moab provides a comfortable basecamp to return to. Each of the 50 tent suites will have a private deck with endless views and an ensuite bathroom with a rain shower. In the cooler months, guests will cozy up under a Pendleton wool blanket next to the wood stove, while in the summer, evaporative cooling fans will keep the space cool and airy.

"Ulum connects with guests looking for elevated design, exceptional hospitality, and refined comfort in nature," Gaghen said. "This resort will inspire leisure travelers and outdoor enthusiasts alike who appreciate the comforts of a boutique hotel, but are truly open to connecting with nature."

Each stay will include daily yoga, acoustic live music in the evenings, and booking help from Ulum’s dedicated concierge. There will also be additional on-site activities, like hiking and some of the nation’s best stargazing.

Reservations for Ulum Moab’s inaugural season, which will run March 30 through October 30, 2023, are available now at
