Run-down old hotels in Paris might still have a bohemian appeal, but not every affordable accommodation in the City of Lights will transport you to the famous “Beat Hotel” in Paris, home from the late-1950s to a family of avant-garde “beat” writers and artists, including Allen Ginsberg and William S. Burroughs. Today, given the price of real estate in Paris, budget hotels are few and far between and wallet-minded travelers often have to be more resourceful than ever. There does exist, however, some quality establishments providing rooms for under 100€ a night. These spots are a mix of old and new, some with the very latest modern conveniences like free Wi-Fi, and hopping lobby bars; others feature garret rooms and romantic rooftop views. Whatever your style or taste, these cheap hotels all but guarantee you’ll have extra euros to spend on, well, anything.
Not strictly a hotel, but a new-generation hostel, this UK import is the city’s only purpose built hostel, with all the comfort and modernity that you would expect including “Pod” beds and lockers. Many of the 300 rooms have views over the canal. You can choose between dorms and private rooms. The downstairs bar, Belushi, is always full.
Hôtel des Metallos
From 89€ a night for a double, this comfortable, modern hotel is designed in the industrial spirit of its central Oberkampf location. Environmentally aware, the hotel puts energy-saving LED light bulbs, water-saving Grohe taps, and double-glazed windows in all the rooms. Another plus, there’s free Wi-Fi throughout, and the staff is very helpful.
Hôtel Jeanne d'Arc
Brilliantly located in the heart of the Marais, near Métro St.-Paul, this unpretentious budget hotel is furnished with an eclectic mix of pieces that make you feel like you’re visiting a great aunt, not staying in a hotel. Double rooms start at 98€. Practically opposite is the gorgeous St. Catherine Square, with its range of restaurants and cafés and their tables under the Chinese mulberry trees.
Hôtel de Nesle
This eccentric Left Bank budget hotel has double rooms starting from 85€. Eccentrically decorated, this quirky address may be lacking in mod-cons such as elevators or mini-bars, its location more than makes up for it, just a short walk from the Seine, St.-Germain, the Ile de la Cité, and the Louvre on the other side of the river.
