Wouldn’t it be nice if vacation could last forever? Sadly, all good things must come to an end. But thanks to the zillions of souvenir options throughout the Orlando area, you can truly take your vacation memories with you in tangible form. Diagon Alley and Hogsmeade—the two areas that comprise Universal’s Wizarding World of Harry Potter—are so full of souvenir options that I had trouble narrowing down my top souvenir picks for you.
You can get everything from chocolate frogs to exploding bonbons to personalized DVDs (starring you and your family!) to your very own sorting hat. And then there’s the phenomenal, much-buzzed-about Butterbeer, which isn’t exactly a souvenir, but in fact can be served in a take-home mug, making it at least a little souvenir-like. Aside from that cream soda-like delight (available cold or frozen), here are your best bets for making the Potter magic last longer than a wizard’s curse.
A wizard’s wand
Step into Ollivanders—with locations in both Hogsmeade and Diagon Alley—and find yourself immersed in a world where the magic of a wizard’s wand actually feels real. A shopkeeper will demonstrate how a wand chooses a wizard, and then you’ll emerge into a store stacked sky-high with boxed wands. Make sure to choose one with gold detailing on the box; these are designed to activate spells throughout the Wizarding World, which makes for a day of great fun.
A magic broomstick
You may not be a competitive Quidditch player just yet, but you can get started by picking up a riding broomstick, an essential element in any Quidditch match. Available at several locations, you can get a fiber optic toy version for under $40 or a beautifully detailed collector’s version beginning at $250.
A wizard’s robe
No wardrobe of wizardwear is complete without an authentic wizard’s robe, available in your choice of Hogwarts houses. Choose from Gryffindor, Slytherin, Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff, each lined in the house’s main color and adorned with a patch of the house’s crest.
A wizard’s scarf
Need a less expensive – or more practical – way to show your support for one of the four houses of Hogwarts? Go for a Gryffindor, Slytherin, Ravenclaw or Hufflepuff scarf. These include each house’s colors and crests, and they’re a surprisingly stylish way to inject a bit of vacation memory into a chilly winter day back home.
A Pygmy Puff
If you’ve read the Harry Potter books, you’ll know that Pygmy Puffs are small pets bred in the back of the Weasleys’ shop. Pick up a plush version of your own—in purple or pink—or under $15 at Weasleys’ Wizard Wheezes in Diagon Alley. Your puff will even get its own public naming ceremony (conducted right there in the shop!)
