From the hundreds of honeymooners canoodling in cabanas, to the many couples celebrating their 50th anniversaries, everyone on Maui seems to be in love. Over 10,000 weddings take place here each year, and the shorelines at sunset are an eruption of flashbulbs nearly every evening. By day, there are all kinds of pursuits the romance-minded can explore: hiking the rainforests of East Maui and sneaking smooches beneath a waterfall; wrapping each other in blankets from the hotel while watching a Haleakala sunrise. At night, however, once the kisses have all been snuck, and the cuddles have all been spent, a great way to rekindle the sparks for another day of romance is with an elegant table for two. Between the fresh cuisine and Pacific Rim flavors, the view of the sunset directly from your table, and wine lists as deep as a West Maui valley, the following restaurants are the best on Maui for telling someone you love them.
Mama’s Fish House
“Mama’s” is synonymous with Maui fine dining, and the mere mention of the restaurant may be enough to make your special somebody swoon. Arrive for sunset to stroll the adjacent palm grove and hidden, sandy cove; then settle in for fish that’s so fresh the menu shows the name of the fisherman who caught it that morning. This culinary experience is truly in a class of its own.
Ferraro’s Bar e Ristorante, Four Seasons Maui at Wailea
With live violin music drifting into the moonlight, the al fresco dining at this beachfront ristorante offers as romantic an evening as you’ll find on Maui. White linens cover the tables and soft candlelight flickers; you can watch the sunset directly from your table before dining under a sky full of stars.
From the moment it opened on Valentine’s Day back in 1990, this New American bistro with a European feel has been the most romantic restaurant in Lahaina. Fine china and crystal adorn white linen-draped tabletops; original artwork adorns the walls; and the fusion of flavors in the award-winning cuisine may make you wish that time would just stop.
Want to really make an impression? Order a bottle of wine by this restaurant’s fire pit, and time its arrival exactly for sunset. This Kapalua classic occupies the point between Napili and Kapalua bays, and its outdoor perch on the end of the point has a near panoramic ocean view.
Sarento’s on the Beach
A lot of Maui restaurants look out at the beach, but Sarento’s is one of the only places with tables right next to the sand. If possible, arrive before sunset and snag a table right on Keawakapu Beach, and finish the night with tiramisu and the sound of lapping surf.
