Could there be a more beautiful place to tee off than South Africa? Aside from the jaw-dropping mountains-meet-ocean scenery, Cape Town also boasts beautiful golf-worthy sunshine for much of the year. Cape Town’s greens aren’t just a secret among in-the-know locals, however: the country has produced legions of world-class athletes (golfers like Gary Player, Bobby Locke, and Ernie Els among them), and champion golfers are known to head to the Cape’s fair fairways for a round or two. You’ll find beachside courses like the Atlantic Beach Golf Estate, where the crashing waves of the ocean lends a soothing soundtrack to help you concentrate on your swing; head to the winelands and you’ll discover many more sprawling fairways nestled amid the mountains, with some delicious wines to toast with after a round. Here are five of the Cape’s finest spots to work on your drive. All are open to visitors—when they're not hosting major global tournaments, that is.
Arabella Country Club
At almost an hour and a half drive, Arabella is a bit of a haul from Cape Town; but you'll soon decide it's well worth the drive. The stunning setting (the Kogelberg Mountains; Bot River Lagoon) is just part of the reason it's amongst South Africa's top 10 golf courses. The other draw? The challenging downhill 8th hole on the Peter Matkovich-designed course.
Steenberg Golf Estate
Start your morning off with a round of golf, and finish the afternoon with a wine tasting or a lavish lunch. Though pricey, this course is set on one of Cape Town's oldest and most beloved wineries. It’s a quick drive from downtown, in the Constantia Valley, and uses the vineyards as a natural hazard.
De Zalze Country Club
Head out to the Stellenbosch Winelands for this gem that is always highly ranked as one of South Africa’s top courses. Once you've played the 18-whole, par-72 course, head down to the wine estate's famed Terroir restaurant for a celebratory feast and a glass of one of the estate’s signature Kleine Zalze reserves.
Royal Cape Golf Club
Dating back to 1885, this club in the suburb of Wynberg is among the country's oldest. It's also among its most celebrated, having hosted tournaments played by the likes of Ernie Els, Gary Player, and Mark McNulty. If your swing is a little rusty, a PGA pro is on hand to give you some lessons.
Atlantic Beach Golf Estate
Its seaside setting in the town of Melbosstrand means you're never too far from the sound of crashing waves, Table Mountain serves as a majestic backdrop, and the manicured lawns are dotted with indigenous fynbos plants. There’s little argument that Atlantic Beach might be the region's most postcard-perfect golf course.
