Sometimes it's a hotel's kid-friendly amenities that make it a great choice for families. Other times, it's the fact that the hotel can make your life a whole lot easier logistically on vacation. You'll find both types of hotels on this list. Barton Creek Resort and Spa and Hyatt Regency Lost Pines Resort and Spa are good choices if your focus is on memorable pool and outdoor time, but you still want to be close enough to Central Austin to enjoy a day trip or two.  (Barton Creek Resort is just over 10 miles from downtown; Lost Pines is about 23.) If you're more interested in taking in lots of what Austin has to offer, consider the well-located Embassy Suites Austin and Hyatt Regency Austin. The Omni Southpark, meanwhile, has features children will enjoy combined with a location you'll appreciate if you want to base your vacation in Austin, but take a day trip to San Antonio.

Omni Barton Creek Resort and Spa

Barton Creek Resort and Spa has plenty to keep kids busy, including nature hikes, mini-golf, two pools and activities like scavenger hunts. The Kids Club offers crafts, stories and more for children 6 months through 8 years while parents enjoy the resort's other activities, such as the golf courses and spa.

With a lazy river and water slide, the Crooked River Water Park might be all your kids need to stay occupied. If you can get them out of the water, recreation staffers lead activities like flag football and horseshoe tournaments. Other options available (at extra cost) include trail rides and rafting.

Embassy Suites Austin Downtown

The location of this hotel makes it easy for you and the fam to enjoy South Congress Avenue, the Capitol and downtown, Barton Springs Pool and the famous "Bat Bridge." Plus, it’s easy to fuel up for the fun: The Embassy Suites chain offers free breakfast. Escape from hot summer afternoons at the indoor pool.

Hyatt Regency Austin

A neighbor to Embassy Suites, the Hyatt puts you close to all the same local attractions, plus it's directly on Lady Bird Lake and the Hike and Bike Trail. (The outdoor pool has a view of both.) You'll have easy access to bat-watching, family strolls on the trail and boat rides on the lake.

Omni Austin Hotel at Southpark

Room options here include the Kids' Sensory Suite with games and activities. Another perk for families is the chain's Sensational Kids program, which offers summer activities and gives young visitors a backpack full of fun treats. The kids will also enjoy the good-size pool. The hotel's South Austin location gives a head start on a day trip to San Antonio.
