You Can Stay in a Medieval Italian Castle Owned by Napoleon Bonaparte's Descendants
Cancel your summer plans: there's a medieval castle in central Italy you're going to want to rent.
Tucked away in the city of Perugia, Italy, the Pieve San Quirico rests on a 1,500-acre historic estate and nature reserve overlooking the Tiber Valley. The estate, Le Torri di Bagnara, also houses a second castle and standing tower, both of which you can also rent. The Bagnara Estate has belonged to noble descendants of French emperor Napoleon Bonaparte since 1901.
Invite up to 14 people to stay with you at the Pieve San Quirico, which has seven bedrooms (each with an ensuite bathroom) and two guest bathrooms. Although it was built by emperor Frederick II of Swabia in the 11th century, the villa has been renovated in keeping with its historic aesthetic, as well as outfitted with modern conveniences (like Wi-Fi). The estate is fully staffed and has a hotel license, ensuring guests a five-star experience.
If you want to bask under the Umbrian sun, a large courtyard offers a romantic backdrop as you sip glasses of red wine and nibble bruschetta and fresh, Italian cheeses.
The infinity saltwater pool offers panoramic views of the countryside, a perfect way to relax after a round of bocce ball, table tennis, or billiards.
You can also venture out and explore the rest of the estate, which boasts a wide range of outdoor adventures. The castle is surrounded by 5,000 square meters of gardens with floral varieties ranging from roses and lavender bushes to pomegranate, cherry, and olive trees, plus a vegetable garden with fresh veggies free for the picking. Further afield, you will find lakes, meadows, and a forest reserve with trails for spotting roe deer, hares, and a variety of bird species.
For an additional fee, you can sign up for spa treatments and yoga lessons, hunt for mushrooms and truffles, and have a private chef cook your lunch and dinner using produce from the estate's farm. The estate can also arrange activities like on-sight cooking classes, as well as wine tastings and art history tours in the nearby towns of Umbria and Tuscany. Just outside the estate, there are tennis courts, horseback riding, and an 18-hole golf course for you to enjoy.
Want to invite more people to join you on your most glamorous vacation yet? The nearby Bagnara Tower can hold up to 15 additional guests. With four apartments and a separate single bedroom, each one can be rented in addition to the castle.
For weddings, family reunions, or any other special event, you can book the Castello di Bagnara, a complex of buildings built between the 11th and 17th centuries. The medieval castle comes with a chapel and 2.5 acres of gorgeous gardens with wild roses, yew trees, begonias, and bamboo.
The weekly rate varies depending on when you book your stay at the Pieve San Quirico castle, with prices starting at 9.950 euros (about $11,271) a week. To stay in the Tower, prices start at an additional 450 euros (about $509.75) a week.
